In the top film 'Fargo' - which was based on a true story - what was the character played by William Macy trying to get money for ? It isn't explained in the film but in the events upon which the film is based he must have wanted the money for something....

Fargo was not based on a true story, despite the fact that it is stated at the beginning of the film. The Coen brothers made that up
I think he wanted the money for a business venture. At one point it seemed as though his father-in-law was going to buy into his venture, thus making the kidnapping unneccessary, but it turned out the FIL just wanted to buy the idea off Jerry, for a nominal fee, and make money himself off it!
I thought he owed money out, did he have some gambling debts or something?
Marky right, the Coen brothers just put that in to make it more intresting
Marky's right but that is beside the point. Why did he want the money, well boognish 76 says it all.
