Is it essential to have an equity card for TV work even if you're only saying a couple of words?

Nope. My GF had a part in a film thats out next year and sh'e only just started up with equity. It just help protect you (like a union) and means you be paid "equity" rates for working.

Since Margaret Thatcher made the closed shop illegal nobody has to have an Equity card for any work in the industry. Whether an actor joins the union is his or her decision, but of course Equity hopes everyone will.
