A girl named Spooner

Does anyone remember this film? I think I've got the right title. It was about a young girl - a bit of a loner (may well have been a gypsy girl) and she was always picked on. Anyway, she cared for and raised a wild baby bird which became her best friend. It must have been almost 30 years ago when I watched it but I remember the bird being stoned to death by the bullies. I cried for weeks and I've been haunted by the film all my life!

I can't find any record of the film anyway and I'm beginning to think I may have dreamt it.
