Interesting fact, trivia fans.

Ermintrude's voice and character was modelled on the actress Phyllida Law - mother of Emma Thompson. Em's dad (and Phyllida's hubby) was the man responsible for bringing the Magic Roundabout to Blighty after buying it from those pesky French.

But you all knew that anyway.

Another interesting trivia fact.

Swindon has a roundabout called 'The Magic Roundabout'.

Well it wasn't called that to start with, but all the locals called it 'The Magic Roundabout', so the council gave in and so that's its offical name now.

It's one large roundabout in the middle with four or five smaller roundabouts around the edge of it. When using it you can choose to drive round the perimeter of it, giving way to anyone on one of the smaller roundabouts as you go round.

Alternatively, do as the natives do, and go across it, driving the 'right way' around the smaller roundabouts, but remembering to drive the 'wrong way' around the larger central roundabout.

At least I hope that's correct, 'cos that's the way I use it.

Have to say though I've never seen Ermintrude on it!

There is also a "Magic Roundabout" in Hemel Hempstead. I's official name is the Plough Roundabout, but is is more commonly known as The Magic Roundaboiut. It is one large roundabout with 5 mini roundabouts around it - sounds confusing, but when you are there it's not too bad!

Mind you, when you use the mini roundabouts and go round the large roundabout in an anti clockwise direction it sends the Sat Nav into a spin!
