Wife (of less than 24 hours) went to the cinema prior to going for a meal. Went to see Friday the 13th (part 1) and were both convinced that they had actually killed people to make the film!! Must admit we are more cynical now - but wife still doesn't like the film to be even mentioned !!!
It has to be The people under the stairs - my friedns older sister and husband took us to see it - when we were about 16 - we shoudln't have got in really but O my God - it freaked us out - there were kids kept inside the walls of this house and this loonie guy kept shooting at the walls to kill them. His wife was a nut too. Most scary films make me laugh if it's gory otr whatever - it's the psychological ones that I find worst and although it's not a horror I hated Pacific Heights - it was the thought of someone being able to take over and stay in your house that freaked me out. I loved the Omen - I saw it when it first came out when I was about 8 and my favourite bit was when the sheet of glass severs the guys head - gory kid and Jaws when the boys leg gets eaten off - my mum couldn't believe it I was laughing hysterically shouting it's still wearing the trainer - so I'm no woos
Andy, Dead of Night creeped me out, too. In my younger days (early '70s), two movies that gave me nightmares were Carnival of Souls and Horror Hotel. I would probably laugh if I saw them for the first time today, but the times were so much simpler then . . . and I was so sheltered . . .
Also, Dario Argento's Suspiria had a number of frightening images.

Yes, Dead of Night I'll go with - especially the episode with the haunted mirror. George Romero's original Night of the living dead is the scariest zombie movie (what makes it creepy is that it's shot like an amateur movie, but for some reason I didn't find Blair Witch nearly so spooky).
Of more modern films the ultimate chiller must be the original version of The Vanishing (not the Hollywood remake).
For me it was Evil Dead - It was the horrible sounds in that film that really freaked me out and i wouldnt watch it again even now! The other thing that really scared me and gave me nightmares for ages was Buck Rogers and the Space Vampire! It really scared me silly , i was only young but again i couldnt watch it now!
