To further explain Marat, "The Death of Marat" is a painting by Jacques-Louis David, and Jean-Paul Marat was an activist in the French Revolution. He was stabbed to death while in his bathtub (by Charlotte Corday.)
We did the 'Scottish Play' at O Level, shammyD, which is quite fun for bloodthirsty kids anyway, so luckily I have been able to read/watch and enjoy others without unfortunate prejudice. Know what you mean, though...
I actually like Shakespeare quite a lot, especially the history plays. I had to study Henry IV part I for O'Level. It was a far better experience going to watch a performance of it than spending month upon month dissecting and analysing it to death in the classroom. Then again, I suppose the analysis did help a great deal in understanding the dialogue when we eventually saw the live action. It certainly helped when watching Branagh's Henry V on screen.
