I am 3 miles at most from the Crystal Palace transmitters but have frequent problems with reception, especially the ITV channels. I bought an amplifying aerial, but even so, tonight's Channel 4 News was breaking up so much that I have reverted angrily to analogue.

Why am I getting problems, sitting virtually in the shadow of the transmitters ?

The reason that are having these problems is more than likely as you say "you are sitting virtually in the shadow of the transmitters " . As daft as it sounds but most of the signal is going over the top of you . I used to be a TV service engineer and had the same problems with the transmitter in High Wycombe in Bucks . That is sited on the highest possible point in Wycombe and most of the people living in within about a four mile radius and down in the valley of this hill were better tuning to the Crystal Palace transmitter because the one two miles away missed them .

Hi whiffy
I had a the same problem, i went to maplins electrics,
they sold me a thing called a reducer, they said the signal was to strong, sounds daft i know, anyway i fitted this to the end of the ariel, ( the end that fits into the freeview box).
its a lot better now although its not perfect.
Ray.
