The programme was called Film (whatever year) and it started with a jazzy piano theme tune.
Does anyone happen to know what it was, or where I can get it?

In the past you've helped to increase my collection of musical memories... please don't stop now.

It's called "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" by Billy Taylor
It's an instrumental version of a (great) Nina Simone song called, 'I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free'.

THANKS

Wow, that was quick. Found Billy Taylor on Amazon and have ordered the CD.

Thanks again guys.
Nice one, postdog. Maybe you can clear something up for me? I have this memory of a Film --, possibly a Christmas edition, where the programme ended with the full version of the song - I think Barry Norman signed off and said something about 'Pole Star'? For years I thought it had something to do with either the artist or the song...
Well I don't know what you mean by full version. I have it in my MP3 collection, and it lasts over 3 and a half minutes. Can't help with any film though.
They played the full 3 mins over a montage of clips from films from that year - but that's by the by. 'Film --' just meant I couldn't remember what year it was.
