Whilst I am not a fan of TV licensing at all, if it were to be abolished, we would see commercials on the BBC to raise revenue.

We would undoubtedly see phone in drivel like Big Brother, the mint or quizmania as well, to raise revenue. It's worth paying the licence fee just to stop that happening. Also the BBC make some great scientific programmes and period dramas, which would undoubtedly fall by the wayside as they probably wouldn't be seen to be commercial enough.

I'd prefer a reduction in the licence fee and the BBC to work harder at selling their products internationally to increase revenue.

And that's my tuppence worth.

mortartube.................. well said!!
Spot on. The BBC is a long way from perfect, but it's still a country mile better than the dumbed down piffle that fills ITV every day, and it's nice to have some refuge from the constant barrage of ads on other stations. It's not just BBC1 and BBC2, remember. There are numerous digital stations and many national and regional radio stations paid for by the licence fee, as well as the World Service and the oft-overlooked other services they offer, such as BBC Bitesize to help GCSE pupils. What they offer in exchange for the licence fee still seems very reasonable to me.

To paraphrase Mr T (from a time when ITV occasionally showed decent programmes), "I ain't signin' no petition, fool".
I wont be signing..... Yet another broadcasting organisation fighting for the limited advertising revenues available, and having to dumb down its programmes even more ; Even more poor quality low cost quiz /reality shows/phone ins etc. No ta!
And have to cope with USA style TV? a big 'no thanks' from me too....
I too don't like the license fee. But it's a darn sight more preferable than having the BBC turn into ITV or, God forbid, another Sky. The commercial breaks drive me mad.

Hi, I'm Barry Scott!!
Nooooooooo

And lets face it, where would Sky be without football and it's imported American programming. Sky's own programmes are uniformly awful.
Who remembers being scared of this coming down the street? The calls of 'quick, turn the telly off' from all around! They used to look so sinister, but so comical now :o)

This is a great site for loads of old programmes too guys!
Even with the tv licence, the BBC produce some awful programmes. And they have adverts already, but they are all for the BBC!
Good on you jojo100 - I've just signed the petition.

I agree with your sentiments exactly - power to the people.
