just thinking about todays standards of music,if cliff richard, daniel o donnell,dolly parton,three names at random, had appeared on pop idol would they have gone through to the next round? personally i dont think so

Totally agree taff.Many of the older generation of singers can't sing that well.
Just off the top of my head Paul McCartney,Bob Dylan,David Bowie,Rod Stewart ,Leonard Cohen,Elton John,and Van Morrison all struggle to hold a tune.
None would have got past Simon Cowell!
On the other hand they all had a talent in the days when musical ability counted.

Yes I think Sir Cliff would have made it. He was a lot better than some.
