does anyone know where i can find past bbc and itv television schedules? or even anything showing how many programmes of each genre there were?
preferably from about 5 years ago until now.

If you only want issues from 5 years ago you should be able to get them for about the same price as a new one.
If your'e doing research into changes in different genres, then probably wise to avoid Christmas, Easter etc. because a lot of 'specials' get shown around that time; also, there tends to be more sport (and more repeats) in the summer months.

The BBC did have a link to their archive, which allowed you to search by date and find out what was shown on the BBC channels that day. You could then click on a programme and find broadcast and repeat details for that show.
You could also find out if it still exists in the BBC archive.
It was an online version of the internal infax sevice at the BBC.
Sadly this experimental prototype seems to be in a state of "review" and no date has been given as to when it will be available. But I have read somewhere that it will return.
