Graphic Design

I am a 24 year old "graphic designer" from north wales, the reason i put the speech marks is because although that is my title, i get the rubbish jobs thsat top designers dont want to do.
My mates have all been telling me that i need to get out of north wales and move to london / manchster.
Is the grass always greener?
My job does seem pretty dead end at the minute and not very challenging. The thing is i worked so hard to get my foot in the door here, id hate to have to go through that again and risk 5 years worth of studying !!!
they say its pointless carrying on up here and that if what i want in life (a decent girl and a decent job) i need to moveaway to ahieve it.
I lived in preston for 3 years and i do enjoy city life, but doeas anybody think im lacking ambition and sshould just say what the hell im young and do it.
??
Any answer much appreciated

And who says there are no decent girls in North Wales? It rather depends what sort of girls you want to get to know, doesn't it.
I think you need to think long and hard about what you, not your friends, want out of life. What's right for them isn't necessarily right for you. There's nothing wrong with not being ambitious and just being content with your lot. You may be a little worse off financially, but what price peace of mind?

I am in a similar situation as you. Ever since I left uni I have ended up in jobs that are graphic design but not really the sort I want to do and not very creative or challenging. I live in Birmingham and although it's a big city I find it very difficult to find jobs advertised here. I was made redundant from my last job and am still looking now. It's got to the point now that I am planning on moving to London in March. I don't know if it'll help the situation but I guess I won't know until I do it. I am moving down with some friends and have friends there already so that's an advantage.
I know how you feel anyway. It's a difficult decision to make!

Hang on - your are 24 and, I suspect, have been to college, degree, etc. So you are still fairly inexperienced in this design stuff. Although most young people believe that they can come out of college and do the best work and earn the best money, it is the case that in some professions, the junior members of staff are expected to do the boring stuff and the ones with greater experience will (naturally), get the best tasks. They older ones probably are continuing the system they were forced to undertake. Its called walking before you can run and getting expereince. It seems that its not the job you need to think about because any other firm will probably be the same until you have some background you can sell. I think you are looking at the other aspects of being in an unfamiliar place and seeing not much fun about it. Most ultimately successful people have done this. In 10 years you will wonder what all the fuss is about. Don't sacrifice longer term yields for short term satisfaction. It doesn't matter what job you are in, its the same all over.

jibjab, im from neath in south wales, and moved to london 20 months ago, i work as an autocad / architectural technician, and have done so for 11 years, moving to london was the best move i have ever made, im not too far away from my family and have made loads of new friends up here. the rate of pay you would be able to command would be similar to that of my line of work - 20 - 30 per hour. people say its really expensive up here, but its not so bad, rent / house prices are through the roof but, sharing a house is much cheaper and a start to meeting new people. the girls will love your accent and is a great ice-breaker. haha
