Carrier Bags
3 Answers
Why don't the Supermarket giants get together on the issue of reducing waste eg. plastic carrier bags in particular. To my thinking it would be very simple to make a drastic reduction of these unsightly bags almost overnight. At the moment ASDA charge 70p? for the fabric vastly superior re-usable bags and nothing for carriers. Why not charge 30- or even 40p for carriers and I'm sure people would drop them like hot potatoes. They are the scourge of the Earth!

I have to wrap all my rubbish in carrier bags before I put it in the black bag otherwise the bag would be ripped open by cats and foxes.
If I didn't reuse the supermarket carrier bags for this purpose, I would have to buy rubbish bags. I would use no more nor no less bags.
So, I am thankful for my free supermarket carrier bags.

I could'nt agree more Matheous, I put forward a similar question in the Environment section a while back and had about 20 good answers-

I totally agree. They are a nightmare. I work in retail (an independent) and people ask for a bag just for 1 item when they are parked outside! or something REALLY HEAVY like a loaf of bread! A lady on Saturday was served by my friend...she had 2 items, asked for a bag for each and then another to put the 2 bags in. Then she came back to the till with 2 more items and did exactly the same thing as before. So,she had 6 bags for 4 items of food. What a joke. Don't these people care about the environment at all? All carrier bags should be charged for like in Ireland...people would soon stop asking for them and re use the millions they already have in their cupboards! The big problem,I think, is that they are good advertising and the supermarkets would never want to lose that.
