John Constable (1776 - 1837) became famous as an English romantic painter specialising in landscapes.

Just as well he did landscapes, as anyone who has seen his few extant portraits will agree. His most famous works , such as 'The Haywain' were painted around the Stour valley near East Bergholt his home village in Essex; the immediate area is and was known as Constable Country even in his lifetime.
