The people going there also want the same thing. That denotes certain minimum standards to be expected of all who stay there. If they say jacket, it means jacket. Proper, smart and whatever would be expected of someone with enough money to stay there. It does not mean one of those old beige jobs that old men wear and it makes them smell, or a cardigan or something you do the garden in. Rather than try to get around it and be embarrassed, try a charity shop, or Primark or borrow one. It needn't cost more than a round of drinks.
Quite often you can wear it in and then take it off at the table - however he will probably expected to wear a shirt also. I'm not saying your husband will or does - but I hate going to a nice restaurant and someone turns up in trainers, a pair of jeans and a T-Shirt. A tie nowadays is often not needed especially in warmer climates, unless the restaurant stipulates this specifically. The dress code is to help the restaurant have a certain look and maintain certain standards. Just think of your very smart husband dressing up for dinner a few times a week - he might like it too !
Thx..I have actually now emailed the Hotel Chain to find out their regulations. Last hotel I sayed in was 4* and you could wear long trousers (inc jeans) smart T-shir & shirts. I did see a man being turned away for wearing 3/4 trousers.
