The Queen's Speech.
35 Answers
I am horrified to read in today's Daily Mail that only 16 percent of the population make an effort to watch the Queen's Speech on Christmas Day.
I have never missed one and take great pride in seeing our lovely Queen deliver a heartfelt narration.
Who will be watching ? (and I don't want any commie answers saying they will be watching the Muslim one on Ch4 instead!!!)
God save the Queen and long may she reign.

I saw bits when I was a kid and was bored silly. I've also become a bit anti-royal so it's unlikely I'll ever see one.
Besides, what's the point? She doesn't even write it. Why not just publish it in the papers or something, it's not like she adds anything in the delivery. Dull, lifeless, empty and insincere are words that spring to mind.
Viva la revolution.

As children, we weren't allowed to open our presents until the Queen had made her speech and I was always desperate for her to finnish! As I got older I watched it less and less. I don't really feel that it is hearfelt to be honest, she doesn't give her speach any feeling and several years ago I was told that it is written for her. Maybe if she let others in the family have a bit to say as well, it might make it more enjoyable but she doesn't do it for me I am afraid I get the feeling from her its another job that has to be done before walking the corgi's.
The queen is a token head of the nation with nothing that I would call real power or consequence.
She addresses family values when her own families could be called in to question. She addresses issues that she appears to have no knowledge of feeling for. I find her cold in her appearences on telly or at events.
I have never felt anything but indifference for the royal family. That said, they are a great tourist attraction. This being the case, I will not be watching the speech. (Tho chances are I wouldn't have been watching the telly anyway).
So once again Wardy, I will have to agree to disagree with you.

Yes we always watch it.
No she's not very polished but then I don't particularly want a media star for our Queen. There's no reason why she should be comfortable in front of the cameras , if she isn't she isn't.
Politicians have training in talking to the media and in front of cameras , but then they have to think on their feet as they're usually digging themselves out of a hole. And they want our votes.
It doesn't worry me that her delivery is a bit unprofessional, besides she's 80 , cut her a bit of slack.
Even though her speech is written for her she decides on the theme and I'm sure she wouldn't say anything she didn't agree with.

i have always been made to watch it and as children not be able to open prezzies till after the queens speech (but we soon changed that bit!)
i think that even if you don't take much notice of what she is saying we should all watch it as the royal family is still very important - to our heritage and to our future.
even if we have stupid politicans who think they are more inportant than her!
i will be watching as will the whole of my family and we will do as long as she does a queens speech!

The Muslim lady has apparently backed out of the alternative Christmas message so I don't know what C4 will do instead.
I will most definitely not be watching the Queen's speech. Call me a commie if you will but I'm with Llamatron on this one. It's written by someone else, she sounds phony and it doesn't instill me with pride.
Besides, I'll probably be having a nap anyway.

So, we should all just watch the pictures and not take any notice of what she says, hehehe???
and the point of that would be?
she says sod all to us 364 days of the year, so why should we listen to a stony faced woman reciting something someone else has written for her, on the one day of the year when all the family get together and have fun?
christmas is about having fun, and if you are religious its about the birth of jesus - since when has it been anything to do with royalty?

Well..... I thsnk you for taking the time to respond but i am a little sad at the responses.
Perhaps my view of The Empire is not as powerful as others see it.
All that said, it does not matter if you do not believe in Royal priveledge, because the Queen believes in each and everyone of us Brits.
God Bless her and Up the Empire.
