camcorder formats

Hi. I am thinking of getting a new video camera as my old sony hi8 is a bit old now and a bit bulky ang big. What is the best route to go down, should i go for mini dv or dvd camcorder or are there other formats available. all reccomendations apprciated, thank you.

DVD and HD camcorders are good if you want the movie equivalent of family snapshots. If you want to edit and produce finished movies then go for a mini DV camcorder with a DV out port.
