I have a friend who insists that 'The Matrix' film is based on a true story but I'm unconvinced. Can anybody out there confirm this? Thanks

Is your friend's name David Icke? He seems to think this too! No, it's not based on a true story. (Though I guess that there's no way to prove this, as if we were all in "The Matrix" we'd hardly know about it).
It's not based on a true story, but it is based on very complex philosophical ideas from all over the globe ( mainly the Far East ). It is explained somewhat in one of the documentaries on "The Matrix" DVD. If i can be ar$ed I'll watch it and come back with more details.
no the matrix is not based on a true story, although it wouldn't be too surprising if neo dies in part 3 only to be reborn. it is actually a mish mash or many philosophical ideas such as self determination and the nature of reality, fate vs free will etc, and theology, in particular gnosticism, buddism and christianity and it borrows heavily from greek and roman mythology. e.g. persephone is the daughter of demeter the earth mother. Persephone loves Hades and Demeter and devides her time between the two. this duality explains her actions in the matrix she loves the Merovingian but also helps/loves Neo. The Merovingian were a line of kings/rules who felt the were the decendents from christ. and Neo himself is maybe supposed to be christ, or maybe not. anywho, i'm disgussted with myself for being such a geek so i'm off. jim
As Jimmer explains by its own nature, the matrix is derivative of 'story'
Interestingly enough there was an article in a recent issue of New Scientist where a number of Scientists/Philosophers were dicussing the theory that we may indeed live in a 'Matrix' state!
