I think you're thinking of "The Name of the Rose", with Sean Connery and Christian Slater. It's based on the book of the same name by Umberto Eco, and centres around a number of murders in a medieval monastery.
I suppose you could describe it as disturbing to some extent, but I would say it's more psychological (unless they're the same thing). If you're interested in the history of the medieval catholic church in Europe, you'll find it interesting. Nevertheless, a good book, and a good film.
