Kids TV Programme - 1990's

Can anyone remember the name of a kids TV programme that was on in the 90's - it was about 3 children and a little creature that lived in the sand (i think it granted wishes or something?!)

'Three children and It'. 'It' was a grumpy sand fairy and the children had to learn quite quickly to be careful what they wished for. I think it might have originally been written by E. Nesbit, author also of 'The Phoenix and the Carpet'.

Wasn't it five children and it? and the sand fairy was called a samiad
