The parents had been together since they first married, and were contented with the one partner for life. The children were mainly very well behaved and well mannered, and really answered their elders back.
This was not in anyway idealizing the family unit, this was the family unit in those days.
Now we see the characters young or old move from one sexual partner to another, portrayal of homosexuality, and even murder.
This now may be an exaggeration of life in the present time, but I do think that this exaggeration of life does have an effect on young audiences, who seem to think that the behavour of the characters in these soaps is the norm, which can only be a bad thing.
