ER - mysterious lack of midwives

Now I know it's only a drama, but they do seem to have a problem with obstetric staff in ER. Last week Dr Kovac delivered a 24 week, premature baby in the ER (despite the fact the obstetrics consultant had been in the ER 2 minutes previously), and Dr Pratt attended to the baby - not a paediatrician in sight. This is not the first time this has happened. Does anyone who has worked in a casualty department / emergency room know how likely this is in real life?

They don't have midwives in the US like we do here. Babies are delivered by doctors (obstetricians i think). Not an expert but have looked into it as i want to be a midwife but ultimately my other half and i would like to move to canada and there wouldn't be much point training to be a modwife if i couldn't be one there! plus i watch far too much discovery health :)
A modwife eh? Thinking of marrying Paul Weller are you?! ;0)
Didn't Abbey Lockhart used to work in the obstetrics department before she worked in the ER. Although she seems to be doing most jobs in the hospital at one time or the other. And ofcourse there was the lovely George Clooney, wasn't he a paediatrician? However, there does indeed seem to be a recent lack in these staff!!
