So, here come the 'Oscars', and apart from the milk curdling thanks chat and impossible frocks, the TV coverage will be delayed by a gap long enough to prevent any repeat of the Janet Jackson boob-popping trick. In this and many other ways the USA is putting almost as much effort into preventing its citizens from glimpsing a mammary than it is into stopping gay people marrying.

On what other earth shattering issues of global importance do you think they should spend their time and money?

Perhaps feeding and clothing the third world, restoring some faith in their own democratic system so that black voters and ex-prison inmates in states like florida don't feel disenfranchised, possibly modernising their heavy industry to help clean up the pollution they cause as they are the largest polluting nation on the planet (over 28% of toxins released - Kyoto treaty figures), Imposing some form of gun control so that somewhat less that 11,000 inocent people are killed each year, rather than funding and supporting dictators who overthrow elected leaders in countries like Israel, Chile, Panama, Guatemala, Vietnam and El Salvador they could give humanitarian aid to the UN and help support democratic elections in all coutries. Is that a good enough start?
