Right well this may seem like a silly question
But im an amature/free lance photographer and as you know if you go to gigs theres always photographers at the front taking photos, basically i was just wondering how i would go about doing that aswell. would i need a special photography pass or something for it?
You need a photo pass. If you can gain the experienceyou should be able to get one, until then go to your local paper and ask them if they want pictures of such and such a gig. Try getting some work experience as a venue photographer.
Basically what security says goes. So its blagging on your credentials. Do you have a band you are close to? I know a girl who was studying photography but an active member of the Starsailor message board so through that she managed to get a photo/presspass to a couple of their gigs on tour.
The bands pr guys will give you that little sticker that says something like photopass sjm presents etc etc you really have to start small, go with a small band and find out who/how you can get in touch with their guys and convince them to give it to you. I take it you are at college or uni, use that to your advantage. Smaller bands need lots of publicity.
I take it you know its generally a three song rule before you are chucked to the back. Find a band on the spaz and start pestering them.
Find a band, find their management (check their website), send them links to some samples on Photobucket or equivalent, ask them nicely and give them a promise of copies of your pics to use as they wish, as long as they credit you, that way there's something in it for them.
If you're planning on trying to flog them, make sure you tell them so. It may influence their decision.
Smaller bands are likely to be more open to this kind of thing.
