The correct (as in not dumbed down to suit a certain large but generally less intelligent audience) title of the first book is "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone".

As Constantine said, the first book is indeed the Philosopeher's Stone, but was realised onto the American market as Sorcerer's Stone, as they felt the word Philosopher would put people off..... :oS
