Yes, he did have a 'real' limp - he was involved in a car accident that left him with permanent nerve damage in his leg - see here:

Thanks for that Catron,I always imagined that he did the injury later in his career because it wasn't evident in the all action >Sweeney< But as it was mentioned in the very informative career history he tried to disguise the injury!!!

I heard that he had polio as a child that left one leg shorter than the other - so it was a real limp.
