The film was set up by a group of film students who used their won portable equipment, and 'starred' in their own documentary.
The clever part was creating a website in the infancy of websites, to create the legend that the film was 'true story'. because of the hype generated by the website and word-of-mouth, the film went on to gross millions.
Daniel Myrick - who enjoyed a sizable share of nearly $250 (and counting!) was asked what he was planing do for his next film.
He smiled and said "What next film?"

A bit more info -
the ending is really set up in the opening reels - the notion that the students arrived to film tne sttory of 'The Blair Witch' and their bodies were never found - just their video cameras, with the film enclosed - which is the basis for the feature film you then see.
The implication is that no-one us sure what happened to the students, but that they probably came to an unsavoury end.
I adored the film - the contrast between cocky young city slickers and their reduction to slobbering wide-eyed wrecks was so convincing - all done by amateur film students who had never acted professionally before.

In the interviews the students created with the locals, the legend states that when the witch murdered people they were left still facing the wall or something.
When the two remaining people enter the derelict shack, the man has been killed (assumingly) as he is positioned motionless facing the wall.
The other students fate (the one they are searching for) is unknown.
Great movie, absoultey fantastic in my opinion.
Wise words however, DO NOT WATCH BLAIR WITCH 2!!!!
Truly awful and not really much to do with the first one.
