So the producers have decided to axe some of the older cast. They say they have no storylines for them anymore. I can see Emily Bishop and Betty being the 1st to go.

Betty Driver has a fascinating real life history - did you know she was an entertainer with her own tv show?
I think these older characters give the Street continuity and realism. They don't need dramatic storylines, their presence is enough.
Some of the newer characters aren't gelling for me - I find it hard to care about Michelle or Carla and wouldn't miss either of them.

I agree with you Ethel, their presence adds balance and I think they are very believable -(I know an 'Emily' in real life!)
I know a lot of people find Ken boring but I think he's a great actor and I hope they don't retire him.
Personally I think Carla is a poor actress together with Lauren and the ex chef turned arsonist (Paul? Can't remember his name!)

What a shame if they do let some of the older characters go. I love Blanche as she is one of the funniest characters in the show at the moment and some of the interaction between the older characters and the younger ones can provide some real comedy moments as well as some very thought provoking ones as they impart their gems of wisdom. I agree that we definately need a good balance of ages in the show.

Im all for balance and there are a fair few gooduns young and old. The problem with the older ones is that soaps try too hard to involve them in hilarious storylines that generally make you cringe. EEs Patrick and Jim Branning springs to mind, although the humour is invariably lost as I find them both to be irritating twonks. Maybe they should just trot off and join Last of the Summer Wine.
Anyway, in Corrie it would be sad to see the old ones go as they seemingly provide the backbone to the soap and light hearted interim moments in between Devs gurning of course which does seem to provide a sense of realism to the general mish-mash of life dramas.
I would be happy to see the arse end of The Mortons, Lauren, Carla, that Scottish bloke, Michelle/Ryan/other kid and Liam as they walk off Corrie into the sunset, never to be heard of again. Bring back Mike (or Danny) Baldwin thats what I say!

I agree with the comments above re the interaction between the old 'uns and also that between the old 'uns and the young 'uns.
I know it's not real life but a big part of corrers' charm is that there is a good mix of ages and long mey that continue. It would certainly not be the same if the average age of the cast plummeted (spelling??!!)
more gurning from Dev please!

Realism and Soap in the same sentance lol
No soap remotely mirrors real life. For a start most people in real life "Work" lol
Babies mixed up, long lost duaghters who take 2 days to trace, murders etc etc.
In reality the only thing exciting that happens in my street is if the council fail to mow the grass or the milkman doesn't come...

I agree with all of the comments above, except I am fed up with Dev's stupid gurning. This seems to be a new trait and perhaps he needs to see a doctor!!
Coronation Street has suffered badly in recent times. They should keep the 'oldies' and get rid of the majority of the talentless actors they have now acquired. I am sure that there is a lot of young talent out there that can be brought into the cast.
We need good storylines that don't drag on forever and believable characters, together with consistency and better script writers. Corrie needs to move with the times but also needs to get back it's wonderful mix of humour and more meaty plots.
