Barry Foster played the Dutch detective Piet Van Der Valk. The program was originally transmitted in 1972 and 1973. I'll be whistling the theme tune all day now!
As a major departure in image - catch Barry Foster in Hitchcock's 'Frenzy' - a really tense thriller.

Forget humming the tune. Have you heard the version with words? It was called "And you smiled" and sung by Matt Monroe and went I thought that I had the world on the end of a string I thought that I was a millionaire Free as the dawn and then came the morning I turned and I saw you there And you smiled and you smiled With laughter in your eyes And the world seemed to fade away And you smiled and you smiled And I was captured Don't you know... I'd like to stay. Now you'll be singing it all day.
