How did Ricardo Montalban end up in a wheel Chair

I was wondering how Ricardo Montalban ended up in a wheel chair because in the Naked Gun he can walk but in the making of Spy Kids the director says that he is in a wheel chaire in real life so i was just wondering how he became disabled...............if anyone can help it would be most helpful
