Maybe "Cribb"?

Thanks but no. Ive just checked that on the imbd website. The lead man was a police detective- slightly built with glasses.
All I can think of is The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, starring Jeremy Brett.

That showed a silhouette in the opening sequence.
If it was the 70's, it couldn't be Jeremy Brett. Could it have been any of the Holmes stuff Peter Cushing did, but I don't remember him wearing glasses.

Thanks for the replies but it wasnt Sherlock.
I know it wasnt either but the names Spender or Spindoe

Sorry meant to give two stars except my poor descriptions.
Maybe I shouldnt be allowed on AB !!
Lord Peter Wimsey?

Still not quite a match with your description but mention of "Cribb" reminded me of its forerunner (sort of!) "Sergeant Cork"...

Campion?
"Campion" was a lot later - late '80s at a guess.
Adam Adament ??
