For me a damehood isnt based on what medals or such is based, she used to be in the army and as such should have been doing army duties,but she used this as vehicle to skive off to do sport but eh gave her a wage,and buggar the people that had to cover for her,but gave the army great pr!!!

I have reservations about anyone in sport or showbiz receiving a knighthood or damehood, unless they've done something else deserving of it - I wouldn't quibble with Bob Geldof's honorary knighthood, for example. I suppose if anyone deserves one for sport, it's Sir Stephen Redgrave - five golds in five separate Olympics is an incredible achievement.

I rather like Kelly Holmes, though - she seems quite a down to earth character with a sense of humour. I'd much rather watch her than some po-faced, aloof celebrity who expects to be bowed and scraped to like royalty.

Thank God someone else thinks it! I thought it was just me. Everyone goes on like she is some kind of saint cause she did a bit of running and got some medals round her neck!

Saw her on a prog' today where she went to meet her hero. I was expecting someone nice like Daley Thompson, with a decent personality, but I was dismayed when it turned out to be Seb Coe, the arrogant, self-opinionated little Tory who tried to ruin Lynford Christie's career over a drugs test which was obviously flawed. Very disappointed.

Give her a break!!.....being in the public eye because of her exceptional sports ability DOES NOT guarantee that she will be at ease in front of the camera.
Some of you sounda bit mean-spirited.....she didn't skive off,-certainly not in the sense of someone who is lazy. Yes-she got good PR for the Army...which it probably needed......but she also gave GB a huge boost and loads of publicity...and now she is doing much to promote sport for young people...surely a good thing???

I'm just grateful we do have among us a few people who can win things, if we all had the attitudes of chip on shoulder innadequate w&nk3rs like most of the above we'd still be hiding from dinosaurs in caves. Ok it's only sport you say but it's indicative of the person, the drive, the endeavour, people like Kelly are suberb role models for our kids, I suppose you'd rather have some z list soap celeb would you?
