About 10 years ago, I decided to try one of the unisex hairdressers in our small town. (The population is less than 5000 but there are about half a dozen hairdressers). It was a Saturday afternoon and I popped my head round the door to ask if they could fit in a 'gent's trim' without an appointment. The women who was obviously the boss looked at the young lady by the reception desk and said: "You can do that, can't you?" She said "Of course", and I took a seat.
I was trying to remember where I'd seen this hairdresser before but I couldn't quite place her. Anyway, she asked the usual questions about how I'd like my hair cut and made a start. She was about half-way through when her scissors slipped and she took a large nick out of the top of my left ear. She apologised profusely, saying "Sorry, I've never done that before". Two minutes later, while I was still holding a tissue to my left ear, she took a similar-sized knick out of my right ear!
I was only charged a nominal sum for the hair (and ear!) cut. A couple of days later I went shopping in the local convenience store. There, behind the counter, was the 'hairdresser' I'd been trying to place in my mind. She was just a shop worker who'd been helping her friend out in the nearby hairdresser's shop! ;-)
