extras on eastenders

does anyone no anything about the extras on eastenders they go on about ian being the longest cast member but tracy behind the bar at the queen vic has been there since day one to

Tracey has only been in Eastenders since 1986. Winston first appeared in December 1985, Eastenders having launched in February of that year.

Adam Woodyatt/Ian Beale is indeed the longest serving actor and longest running cast member.

Awww - Big Ron! What a sweetie!

I'm not sure where the distinction is drawn between extra and cast member. It's not whether they speak, because Tracey and Winston have both had lines to say, and I used to know an extras actor who did same (she was the granny on the Kit-Kat ad who gave her grandson a prize draw Kit-Kat wrapper in his birthday card).

I'm wondering if it's to do with what type of contract they have.
