Starship: 'We Built This City'
5 Answers
I am a big fan of Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and Starship (all different incarnations of the same band).
A line in the song 'We built this city' goes:
'Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio, dont you remember'
I wanted to know if anyone could tell me who 'Marconi' was referring to. There are many people I have found on Wikipedia with that name, but none that seem relevant to that line of the song.
Also, a fight between Donny Baldwin and Mickey Thomas resulted in Baldwin getting fired and Thomas having facial reconstructive surgery. Has it ever been announced what that fight was over?

I'm sitting here firing some random tunes on the media player, Starship ( we built this city ) comes on, so i thought i'd do some bored googling.
I hit the button and ended up at 'songfacts.com' where i hit the spool wheel on the mouse and read the following:
" Anyone know what the lyrics "Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio" is supposed to mean...if anything at all, I doubt it has to do with the Marconi who invented the radio...right? thanks -Scott
- Scott, NYC, NY "
I'm thoroughly freaked out - what's the chances of that happening.

it's a bit hard to see why anyone who likes the early, more groundbreaking stuff would also go for the crass commercial later stuff like starship. it's really two different bands, like peter Green's fleetwood mac and 'rumours' fleetwood mac as a similar contemporary example. no stylistic coherence or continuity whatsoever.
