Do Sky boxes need a phone line and if so why?

They don't need a phone line, but if you want to watch Box Office or some sports programmes then one would be needed.

They say you do but you don't. The only part that requires it is when it is first installed to validate the card, however it can be done by the engineer over the phone with SKY.

The reason I ask is that when the engineer left the upstairs box was not plugged in.
