Stephen Fry in America - a complaint...

...a wonderful series, but why are there only 6 programmes being made? This means that there are only about 7 or 8 minutes at most in which to show the delights of each state, in some cases we weren't even given that much to savour. The BBC should have made the series longer to devote more time to each state. A wonderful oppurtunity lost.

Like you I was wondering why they tried to cover 50 states in a six part series.
In part 2 they did the "deep south" and a couple of the states he did not even mention.
And Florida, the state most British people visit, only got a brief mention of Miami (which he hated) and a VERY short boat ride on the everglades.
No mention at all of the Florida theme parks (which he probably would have hated) but to me you cannot cover Florida with even mentioning them.
Lets face it, he could have done a 6 part series JUST on the deep south (or on any other group of half a dozen states)

Stephen Fry openly said in an interview that he didn't want to visit Florida, especially Miami because it didn't represent America properly.
Personally, I too would never go to Florida (excluding the everglades) unless forced!
I agree that a much longer series was needed. I do like Stephen Fry though, a brilliant bloke.

Hi. Just not my cup of tea. Just see it as a retirement/tourist place with wall to wall sunshine and theme parks. No real character. An American version of Benidorm!
If I travel I like to see the 'real' country and the 'real' people. I can see why it wouldn't really fit into the programme and why Stephen Fry says it is out of place in the South.
Each to his own though.

Point Taken.
However, I have just toured round this site and can honestly say there is nothing on there that has changed my mind or would make me contemplate giving it a try.

I have a friend who has a second home in Florida so could go!

I think the premise of the show is to uncover the states that are less talked about over here; less corporate, almost. Everyone knows about Disneyland, in fact a considerable number of the viewers will have actually been, so it would have been silly to devote too much time to that particular state. Especially when there are much more interesting locations to visit, like the MasonDixon line.
