Its a great invention but, what would they do without it??

They'd do exactly what they did before it was invented. i.e. they'd get a lowly paid 'assistant studio manager' (= general dogsbody) to hold up a series of handwritten 'idiot boards' in front of them.

Carol Hinds of 'East Midlands Today' seems to struggle with it, never mind without it, even now she's got her new specs.

In all fairness to the gal, though, she is one of the few BBC newsreaders able to pronounce the place name 'Groby' correctly.
