Arthur was adopted by Mrs. Clenam after his father had an affair at the Dorritt's boarding house (or bordello as the case may be) as to how this lead to their ruin is beyond me.
They cannot be related as they married.
So Miss Sarah I must confess that I, like you, am most perplexed by this outcome at this juncture.

I agree it was most confusing. I thought Mr Clennam had an affair with a dancer who ended up in Marshalsea where Amy was born and is, therefore, no relation to Mrs Clennam. But what was the point of Miss Wade apart from spoiling life for everyone else and how did the Clennams house manage to completely collapse and not damage ajoining properties? I think we need a sequel as I still think Amy married her half brother!

I thought the box that Tattycoram opened was the same box stolen by Rigaud from the twin brother of Flintwitch which was passed to Miss Wade. Flintwitch was told to destroy the contents but didnt. If it is not that I am even more confused. The odd Miss Wade employed Rigaud to follow the artist and his new wife the spoilt daughter of Mr Meagles.......this is getting more confusing...but why ?

It says in wikeapedia that Mrs Clenam suppressed the contents of a will, causing the Dorrits to stay in prison. Arthur Clenam found out that the Dorrits were heir to a fortune and got them out of prison. So whose will was that then?
It wasn't his "father's" will. Cos if it had been, he'd have known his father was Amy's father.

Thanks in a pickle. I suppose we don't know how Mrs Clennam got to suppress that will, or whose it was? It was all very strange wasn't it?
Also strange that Mrs Clennam had enough power in her legs, after being chair-bound for years, to go off and find Amy Dorrit. You'd have thought she'd have got up on the odd occasion to make herself a cup of tea.
Anyway... Amy Dorrit's goodness got very tiring in the end. I liked Flora, Fanny and John best.

Arthur was the son of Mr Clennam and a dancer. Mrs Clennam hounded the dancer and took her child and years later she died in The Marshalsea prison on the same day Amy was born to Mr and Mrs Dorrit. Arthur's Grandfather arrived at The Marshalsea on the day the dancer died after finding out about his sons indiscretion with the dancer and hoping to see his grandchild. But he was to late and believing his grandchild to be dead willed his fortune to the baby girl born that day in honor of his dead Grandchild ( who wasn't dead)So Little Dorrit was no relation to Arthur Clennam. Andrew Davies who adapted the script said he couldn't stick strictly to the book as it would have been impossible, so some of the story lines are different to the book.
