emmerdale

I was watching emmerdale with my grandchild last night when dike dingle kissed jasmine. Why does
abnormal behaviour such as this have to be shown when normal families are watching tv together at 7:00pm. It was hard explaing to a seven year old why 2 female's were kissing. It's just another case of the media drip feeding everyone into believing that lesbian and homosexual behaviour is natural.

Sacha - the little girl I spoke about will probably never mention what happened to her parents, but she will probably take ages before she holds hands with another little girl again.
It is up to parents to explain things to their children, but not before they are ready to comprehend, and a sensible parent will be lead by the child.
I personally do not think the soaps represent every day life. Good god, can you imagine living in Albert Square!!!

LoftyLottie, I see what you are saying about soaps going over the top with what is protrayed, but I still feel that they are only showing what is actually happening in the world.
Maybe the soaps should be on later in the evening, and yes it is up to parents/guardians what they allow their children to watch.
In regards to playground behaviour you are going to get children saying things to others because maybe those children do watch a lot of tv, and watch things that they probably shouldn't, but again thats up to the parents.
Once a child hears something then they are going to repeat it. It's up to the parents what they tell their children about what they have heard.
But the children who are syaing these things need to be spoken to by their parents, because if the parents are allowing them to watch things like this then it is their responsibility to monitor what their child is syaing and to whom they are saying it to. Children say things that they dont understand.
I agree that children as young as 7 are too young to hear about these things and too young to explain things like that too, but again we can't always help what children discover.

Shame that all parents aren't responsible. I certainly would think twice before letting a young child watch a TV soap these days.
My children's questions were answered as they arose and discussed to a level they could understand. As they grew older and more aware then things could be explained in more depth.
At the end of the day it's up to the parents to decide what is suitable on TV for their own children, only they know what their own children can take on board and comprehend.
We can't control what kids pick up from other kids though, I would agree.

Hi daniela 31 and sasha-2008 I haven't disappeared I was just waiting until everyone had there say. I really dont have anything more to add except to say I will never change my views just as the people who replied wont change there's. I know for certain that by showing these scenes on TV I will never be convinced me that this type of behaviour is normal. When people say that soaps reflect real life I always thought TV was an escapism from the real world. I say thank God the first people created were Adam & Eve and not Adam & Steve or else we would'nt be debating this right now. I do agree though that in future I wont be watching any more soaps with or without my grandchild.
Soaps emulate real life??? purlease, if so then no one would be living in Albert sq etc. Talk about bad luck, 45 death, 58 fires, 10 rapes, gawd knows how much general violence all in a quarter of a squarer mile, now I'd consider that bl00dy unlucky!
Soaps?? complete and utter mind numbing boredom, appealing to idiots with no imagination, a commodity we are sadliy not short of!

I'm with you frodsham. Just because it's PC to accept that it exists doesn't make it morally or naturally right. I'm no homophobe, live and let live and all that, but I draw the line at having it shoved in my face and being told I'm the odd one out because I object to seeing it. It's like all the other choices you make in life, such as colour, race, politics, and even TV - it's YOUR choice to make, and no one elses.
PS - it's my choice not to watch Emmerdale cos I think it's boring, but I wouldn't dream of stopping those who want to.

I think that there is a vast difference between accepting that homosexuality is normal for some and just getting on with life, and the current trend of having it shoved in our faces at every opportunity. If it is true that one person in ten is gay then that's fine, but why must programme makers now go out of their way to include gays in the soaps whenever possible.
People would accept things far more if they were not told they had to accept it.
For that reason I am totally against gay bars and gay marches, etc. Why should any group of people have to draw attention to themselves - it only alienates.
