sketching program similar to paint but better!?

at work i quite often need to generate simple sketches to illsutrate problems but i find paint is rather time consuming. is there another similar program which is slightly more advanced and yet easy to use?
ive tried the google one and couldnt get on with it.

It depends what you mean by simple sketch
... sketch as in sketch - or sketch as in diagram?

and how do you intend to use it

word comes with very basic drawing tools (as does excel)
