Lost sound in Media player

My OS is Vista haome premium, I have itunes installed as well Windows Media Player 11 and have had no clashes. All my music is in Windows library and I have always played from there. itunes is a necessity for transferring tapes and vynyl to CD and usualyy only contaians recently added music waiting to be recorded to CD. I now have no sound in Windows media player but all other audio sources are working fine. If I put audio CD into drive it I dfon't get the dialogue box asking what to do ( which has always been the case up to now) it loads the cd into itunes and plays from there. I have been ont to Windows update site for downloads but am told update does not apply yo my system. If I uninstall Media player and then reinstall will I lose allmy music? or are ther any other ways out of this.I have tape2pc connected but disconnecting makes no difference.

I don't understand why "itunes is a necessity for transferring tapes and vynyl to CD". You can do that with WMP.

Neither iTunes nor WMP store music, they are just catalogues. Uninstalling them won't remove any music. Why not just uninstall iTunes?

I am using mixmeister tape 2 pc and vynil2 pc and these automatically import recorded tracks to itunes an d will install itunes if not already on system.
As all other audio sources are OK i have to assume that the fault is with WMP, which is why I'm thinking unistall and reinstall from Windows web site, but I don't want to lose more than 1000 tracks.

Well as I said, WMP doesn't store music, it just catalogues it - so uninstalling it will not cause you to lose any music. It just means that after re-installing, you'll have to rescan your media for the music.

Problem has now been solved. When I tested speakers I found that the settings had been compromised and was set for full surround sound (which I do not have) and WMP was channeling sound to five non existent speakers giving me the sound of silence.. Resetting to stereophonic sound restored everything. I have no idea how this setting was altered.
Incidentally, how does WMP transfer tape and vynil to CD?
