Laptop for a novice

My wife wants her first computer and basically knows verlittle about them.

We've been searching on the internet for one which would be a good starting point and have come up with the Advent 6552

She likes the large screen(wide and 17 inches) and its suitability for films and gaming.

She would do a fair bit of Internet searching but not a great deal of word processing etc

Any opinions?

Personally I would not buy an Advent.

These tend to be "badged" laptops made by a whole load of different no-name companies so they are not a proper brand as such (like say Toshiba or HP).

They used to be sold only through PC World / Currys, although I believe they are now sold in other places as well.

The same companies who make laptops for Advent also make some of these no-name brands sold by supermarkets.

I am not saying all Advents are bad (some people have had very reliable Advents) but others have had very poor Advents.

I would suggest going for a brand who make their own computers and have a world wide reputation and image to keep up.

Names like Toshiba, HP, Dell, Sony, Lenovo, Acer and so on.

why does she want a laptop? I have a Toshiba laptop but now I don't travel with it I'm going for a desktop with the biggest flatscreen I can get.....

I'm pleased with my Acer Aspire 5315 which only cost me �279 at Asda last August. But it is the first laptop I have had, so I have nothing to compare it to.

there is no such thing as a starter .... anything

within a couple of months she should be beyond "starter" ... so what you going to do ... get rid and buy an "intermediate" lappy? .... presumably then the quite good model

set a budget
�400 will buy a really good machine for general purpose users

look in a couple of magazines in tesco ... see what's recommended in your price range

look in pc world and actually touch a couple ...

then a bit of google ... and to find a good price .

btw ... agree with VGH about advent

look on the dell website ... they are struggling ... and have some decent deals

you can take the hp , Toshiba and Dell laptops.

these are the branded companies which deals in the laptops.

the performance of these companies laptops are very good.

you can take any one. i have hp laptop.
