Last of The Summer Wine

I happened to come across the new series of Last of The Summer Wine, now with Russ Abbott, Bert Kwouk and Brian Murphy and couldn't believe the BBC have wasted money continuing this series.

It was completely unfunny and almost every comment made by the cast was met with canned laughter. It just seems completely pointless to scrape the bottom of the barrel for laughs. The series was once quite amusing, but since most of the original cast have died off, it can never be the same.

I do agree that (having watched it since it started) that it is sadly now only a ghost of it's former funny self.
As you say,when someone dies they just "shove" someone else it to replace them (often not successfully).
It is (again sadly) becoming somewhat of a TV rest home for aged and faded comedians.
The best thing would have been to have taken it off air when Bill Owen died.Kathy Staff said she was leaving when he died,but of course she didn't.
BTW,the laughter isn't canned.They film it (without laughter) then show the film to a studio audience,then add their laughter to make what we see.

I still enjoy watching it, but it is certainly not as good as it used to be. I think now is the time to retire it. I have watched it from the very first episode, unfortunately because it is about old people, they will sadly die off. I would rather see repeats of the very old episodes. I still rate it as my favourite comedy programme.

I quite liked First of the Summer Wine about compo & co in their younger days but I think it only made one series - pity.

UK Gold are currently showing some of the old shows.

I saw part of one the other day that had Michael Bates in it (he was only in the first 2 series).

Have to say it has NEVER appealed to me, one of the unfunniest shows on TV.

Mind you, while I love Ronnie Barker in Porridge, I have never liked Open All Hours which was also wrtitten by Roy Clarke, so maybe it is his writing I dont like.

No it was 2 series (6 shows in each), shown in 1988 and 1989.

Thirteen episodes in all, if you include the pilot.

Oh come on you lot, be fair!

It's total pants I agree, but it is respectable pants, and I would far rather this than reality shows (not that I watch either)

And be proud, cos it's the longest running TV "comedy" in the world.

Hasn't been the same since Bill died, he was the only reason I watched it. He was soooo scruffy but yet soooo lovable and endearing.
I wish First of ..... would be repeated with more and more series' made showing the lads grow and develop into the charecters we know.
