One effect of immigration is, indeed, to increase the number of young taxpayers. It may delay the inevitable a little. Immigrants do cost in some ways, in that they have, or will have, young families and so put strain on local schools etc but, yes, your theory is correct. However, simple pension planning may not be a reason to have unrestricted immigration !

Didn't Margaret Thatcher make it easier for people to buy their own homes? I think the idea was so that these could then be sold off in later years to fund the costs of retirement/care homes, with possibly a little left over for Public Joe to buy a few goodies?
The government reap millions of pounds in taxes, but it's wasted on things such as their expenses. There'd be enough money to fund the health service, pensions, etc., if someone had the gumption to get rid of the pen-pushers and to put our money into worthwhile projects. That includes getting industries back on track again and producing more than importing.

I think Ice.maiden you need do do some maths.
If you calculate the cost of MP's expenses and compare that to the cost of paying old age pension for a large population I think you will see that what you've just written is just plain wrong!
Tell you what I'll help
There are 650 odd MPs - if each claimed 1million per year that'd be less than 1% of the cost of the NHS
And the projected cost of pensions is way over that.
Public sector pension liabilities are projected at 1 trillion.
Getting rid of a few duck houses won't cover that!

no jake you didnt read the answer or more likely didnt want to see what was written. ice said get rid of pen pushers too.
Noo labour have employed hunfreds of thousands of extra pen pushers and useless 5 a day co ordinators (to take an example before you become your usual pedantic self). If the public sector was tailored correctly then there would be alot more money spare and services would not be hit as is the popluar myth spread by pinkos such as yourself.
To answer the question though, yes we do need immigration but it needs to be controlled. Noo labour just let the flood gates open and we have ended up in a right mess even to the point where the BNP have gained popularity - than you Gordon for that.

The problem with bringing in more immigrants to pay for the baby boomers pensions is that you then have to bring in MORE immigrants later to pay for when the original immigrants retire.
And so it goes on.
Part of the ongoing problem is that due to the ease of getting benefits and child maintenance we have millions of people in this country who are a DRAIN on the economy and contribute almost nothing.
The people who go out to work find their tax being used to pay people on the "dole" who cannot be BOTHERED to work. There is plenty of work if they wanted it, they just cannot be bothered as it is easier to stay on the dole.
We have created a huge underclass of people who are content to live on state handouts.
In my local sainsbury's car park there are around 10 or 15 immigrants (Iraq, Afganistan etc) who offer to clean cars for about 5 (many are illegal immigrants).
The reason they do this is that no benefits are available to them, so they HAVE to earn money.
Many UK people manage to get benefits so dont have to work, so finish up being a drain on the country.
The answer is make it MUCH harder for people to spend their life on benefits and get them out to work. Then maybe we could afford to pay for the older members of society who have retired.
(Before anyone says "how do you know they are illegal immigrants", the Border agency raided the car cleaners a few months ago and found 75% of them were illegal).

Sigh
Still no numbers
You'd have thought that all these people who've had the benefit of avoiding a liberal education would have been able to drag togethers some figures to justify their view wouldn't you?
I'm begining to think that all these "opinions" are just based on prejudices.
But that'd be silly these people are far too clever for that!
