Civil Service jobs to be outsourced to India.
The British Council, which is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth office is to get rid of 500 British jobs and save 45million.
The Finance and IT jobs will be done locally in India.

Does it make sense to recruit locally, or is this a smack in the teeth for British workers?

This is a worldwide phenomenon. In Spain when you call telefonica (the countries telephone company) you get redirected to people in Brazil , and many other countries .As Spanish is one of the 5 most popular languages int he world they outsource their work to foreign call centers.I got my friend who is canarian and speaks Catalan Spanish to call on my behalf. They couldn't understand he was calling about his friends phone and were trying to sign him up for the Internet !!
Does that make spain less British too?Or is it the way of the world and big business in general?
Ill give you a clue. Its the latter.
??? DID THAT HELP ???

I love it that people who plainly haven't a clue think they know all the facts...yup all public sector workers are workshy. On what basis exactly do you come to that obviously well informed decision, have you ever worked in the public sector?
Sara could be on a break, it might be a day off (yes we do get them) she might work part time. The point is she has every right to be on here. You could ask what are you doing on at 4 oclock youngmafbog.

youngmafbog, I've recently had an operation but will be going back to work shortly.
internet access is closely monitored within the civil service, but this is a site that hasn't been blocked completely. for me, it is so slow from work (only attempted during my lunch break, of course) that I wouldn't even bother trying to get on. most sites which enable you to chat to the outside world (facebook, msn, checking your personal emails, etc) are completely blocked. even attempting to access blocked sites creates a log that is closely monitored, and generally leads to disciplinary action.

Yes I have worked in the public sector, it is full of people who cannot get a better paid job in the private sector fortunatly I was taken on as a trainee at the time and I will say the training was very good.
I was once ticked off by our Nalgo rep for not taking enough sick days! That's the mentality. You only have to deal with any governement agency to experience the awesome mediocrity.
