They are, but it's quite difficult to advertise a car, without giving a list of statistics - an instant turn-off for the viewer, but in fact, the kind of thing the viewer would really like to know, i.e. how much is it / what insurance group is it / will it fit in my garage / how long a delivery time is there / what gadgets can i get, and so on. So, advertisers go for the more subliminal 'You really would like this wouldn't you?' angle, which does lead to an emphisis on mini-dramas, and very little about the product. Pretentious? Probably, but things could be worse, they could be trying to get you to buy a brand of sugar - the mind boggles!
