How do you go about selling a story to a newspaper/magazine?

speaking from experience if this is a local issue we don't usually pay for stories, the national are different but if it is related to the link that factor 30 posted you could probably get your local interested but i very much doubt they would pay for it. We have freelancer's who write for us but these are usually featured articles, or new stories from a press...

Go to your local library. Borrow 'Writers and Artists Yearbook' or 'The Writers Handbook' These explain all you need to know.
