Should they bring back variety?
10 Answers
I watch "Our Gracie" (Gracie Fields) which was recently on TV.
Afterwards there was a documentary about the Rochdale born star, in this programme they showed a clip from her appearance on a Royal Command Performance.
All this got me into thinking, in this day of endless repeats, why can't they repeat some of these Royal Command Performances along with repeats of "Sunday Night at the Palladium".
I am sure with the lack of variety on TV plus boring Saturday night's and Sunday night's viewing, it would make a great change from these constant celebrity shows that those of a more advanced age are forced to endure.
Who knows, it make help to bring back "Variety".

I think you would be surprised how dated some of them would look - if they were put on Saturday nights there would be uproar - I think people would go mad.
I would love to see variety back on but it is expensive television to make. I agree with earlier comment that things like Britain's Got Talent is variety or the nearest we will get to it - I would wonder if there is that much high quality variety out there now as there aren't really the theatres through the country where people learning their talent can go and gain experience so where would they come from week in week out? Wouldn't fancy being researcher on that trying to get bookings weeks ahead
There are repeats of most shows if you have Sky unfortunately even Dick Emery is repeated I thought that was hilarious when I was little!

Reality shows are cheap to make. That's why they are so many. Proper variety shows with decent guests are not.
Although I think many of the older generation would be interested in a Live From The Palladium revival, advertisers would know that only those older viewers would be watching. Aside from Strictly Come Dancing, I don't think it is the BBC remit to broadcast something that would not be considered mainstream.
Advertising is all about appealing to the stereotypical spenders (the under 50's. That is why the yanks axe so many of their shows. If the 18-49 share target is not reached then they axe the hsow regardless as to whether many more oldies are watching.
As for me, I would live to see the old Palladium Shows come back. Bit of singing, magic, comedy etc. But it won't happen.
