Tv remote works DVD

Hi,Got a new Toshiba tv the other day and I am a bit puzzled over what to do about a problem that I am having with the remote.Some of the functions to adjust brightness etc operate my Alba DVD player too and vice versa.I could ignore this if it wasnt so annoying-try fast forwarding a dvd when your tv changes inputs!The thing that surprised me about this was that my 'universal'remote(thats not the one I am talking about by the way)will not operate the dvd at all.Any solutions please.
